Ergonomic Assessments
Ergonomics is the intent of designing the job to fit the employee. That means setting up a workstation properly. Assessing more tools to make the workstation fit, or adjusting the present setup, can allow for more production and less strain on the worker’s body.
Repetitive motion injuries occur due to fatigue in muscles and joints. The constant routine and motion of doing a particular job that may require your thumb and fingers to do a constant repetitive motion or pinching will cause these problems. By taking a 30- second micro-break to stretch your body can significantly rejuvenate you.
Identifying the pain early on can prevent a more serious injury from occurring. Particular symptoms such as pain or soreness and numbness, tingling and apparent loss of strength of muscles are a strong identifier of a repetitive motion injury.
Management needs to be notified of these ergonomic problems to help find a solution. Working together with the Innovis Health Occupational Medicine team can help to minimize and possibly eliminate those problems.
We will analyze the job and assist in taking corrective action. Altering the work area to fit your needs, changing the pattern of work so that the movements alternate between sitting and standing and proper lifting techniques with legs and arms will help as well. When lifting, you do not want to twist your torso because of the strain it places on your body.
The following are common repetitive motion injuries:
- Tendonitis – an inflammation of the tendons caused by performing repetitive motions in an abnormal manner.
- Tenosynovitis – a condition in which both the tendon and its covering become inflamed.
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome – a painful squeezing of the median nerve in the wrist. Commons symptoms associated with this are loss of grip, muscle pain, and weakness and numbness in the thumb and first two fingers.
